Spring Tune-up

After a long winter, give your bike a thorough spring check to prepare for the riding season:

Perform a thorough cleaning of the entire bike to remove winter grime
Replace brake pads if worn from winter riding
Inflate tires to proper pressure and check sidewalls for cracks
Inspect the chain for rust or stiff links, replace if necessary
Check all cables for fraying and replace if damaged
Lubricate derailleurs, brake pivots, and all moving parts
Tighten all bolts to their recommended torque specs
Take a short test ride to check shifting and braking

Fall Preparation

Get your bike winter-ready before the cold and wet season arrives:

Install fenders if you plan to ride through wet weather
Switch to winter tires with better grip if available
Apply a thick layer of frame protectant against salt and moisture
Switch to a wet lubricant that resists water washout
Install brighter lights as daylight hours decrease
Consider reflective tape or accessories for visibility
Service your brakes thoroughly before wet conditions arrive
Store or waterproof your saddle bag and accessories
Long-Term Storage Tips

If you plan to store your bike for an extended period, follow these steps:

Clean the bike thoroughly before storage
Lubricate the chain and all pivot points generously
Release brake cable tension slightly to reduce spring fatigue
Inflate tires to about 75% of their maximum pressure
Store in a dry place, ideally off the ground using a wall mount or stand
Cover the bike to protect against dust

Drivetrain Deep Service

A thorough drivetrain service goes beyond basic cleaning:

  1. Remove the chain and soak it in degreaser for 15 minutes
  2. Remove the cassette and clean each cog individually
  3. Clean chainrings while inspecting tooth profiles for shark-finning
  4. Check chain wear using a chain checker tool — replace at 0.5% elongation
  5. Inspect derailleur pulleys for play and worn teeth
  6. Regrease the freehub body and check for smooth engagement
  7. Reassemble and fine-tune front and rear derailleur limit screws
  8. Perform a full index adjustment for crisp shifting
Specialized Tools You May Need
Advanced maintenance requires investment in quality tools:

Torque Wrench

Essential for tightening bolts to specific torque values, especially on carbon components.

Chain Whip & Cassette Tool

Required for removing and installing cassettes during drivetrain replacement.

Bleed Kit

Specific to your brake brand (Shimano, SRAM, Magura), needed for hydraulic brake maintenance.

Bottom Bracket Tool

Varies by BB type — Hollowtech II, PF30, T47 each require their own tool.

Spoke Wrench

Allows precise spoke tension adjustments during wheel truing.

Cable Cutter

Clean cuts on brake and shift cables ensure smooth operation.

When to Visit a Professional

Some jobs are best left to experienced mechanics:

Frame alignment and damage assessment after a crash
Full suspension linkage overhaul and pivot bearing replacement
Internal cable routing on modern frames
Electronic drivetrain firmware updates and troubleshooting
Hydraulic brake hose shortening and rerouting
Carbon frame inspection and repair
