OpenStreetMap lists 3,917 public stations in France in 1,756 towns and cities: 1,429 compressed-air pumps and 2,490 bike repair stations, 1,871 of which have a built-in pump. In total, 3,298 stations let you inflate a tire.

Repair stands with hand pumps and compressed-air pumps are roughly balanced in France, so larger towns usually offer both.

18% of the stations are in the 41 cities with their own page below; the other 3,195 are spread across smaller towns.

Free or paid?

1,740 stations in France carry fee information: 1,463 are marked free and 277 paid (84% free). So the vast majority of mapped pumps cost nothing. Stations without a fee tag are not necessarily free.

Valves, gauges and opening hours

286 stations list their valve types: 194 fit Presta, 282 fit Schrader, and 113 fit Dunlop (Woods) valves.

Of all stations, 115 have a pressure gauge, 69 are covered, and 93 are lit at night.

How public bike pumps work

Public bike pumps come in two kinds. Bike repair stations are posts with a hand or floor pump, often with tools on steel cables and a hanger to hold the bike. They stand in parks, at train stations, on campuses and along cycle routes, and they almost never cost anything. Compressed-air pumps are electric compressors, mostly at gas stations, car washes and bike shops. They fill a tire in seconds but are built for car tires.

Before you pump, check your valve. Most repair-station heads fit both Presta and Schrader; gas-station air chucks fit Schrader only, so a small Presta adapter is worth carrying. With a compressor, add air in short bursts and check the pressure, because a narrow road tire can burst well below car pressure. The right pressure is printed on the tire sidewall.
