Bike pumps in Italy at a glance

OpenStreetMap lists 921 public stations in Italy in 518 towns and cities: 146 compressed-air pumps and 775 bike repair stations, 402 of which have a built-in pump. In total, 548 stations let you inflate a tire.

Most stations in Italy are bike repair stands: a post with a hand or foot pump, often with tools on steel cables. They take a little longer than a compressor, but they are usually free and in public space.

9% of the stations are in the 7 cities with their own page below; the other 841 are spread across smaller towns.

Free or paid?

259 stations in Italy carry fee information: 234 are marked free and 25 paid (90% free). So the vast majority of mapped pumps cost nothing. Stations without a fee tag are not necessarily free.

Valves, gauges and opening hours

25 stations list their valve types: 12 fit Presta, 24 fit Schrader, and 2 fit Dunlop (Woods) valves. Riders with Presta valves should carry a small adapter.

Of all stations, 34 have a pressure gauge, 18 are covered, and 13 are lit at night.

193 stations are open 24/7 and 224 have opening hours listed. Pumps inside shops or fuel stations follow their opening hours.

How public bike pumps work

Public bike pumps come in two kinds. Bike repair stations are posts with a hand or floor pump, often with tools on steel cables and a hanger to hold the bike. They stand in parks, at train stations, on campuses and along cycle routes, and they almost never cost anything. Compressed-air pumps are electric compressors, mostly at gas stations, car washes and bike shops. They fill a tire in seconds but are built for car tires.

Before you pump, check your valve. Most repair-station heads fit both Presta and Schrader; gas-station air chucks fit Schrader only, so a small Presta adapter is worth carrying. With a compressor, add air in short bursts and check the pressure, because a narrow road tire can burst well below car pressure. The right pressure is printed on the tire sidewall.

All stations on this site come from OpenStreetMap, where volunteers add and update them. If a pump is broken, gone or missing from the map, fix it directly in OpenStreetMap or use the report button on the map. The change appears here after the next data update.
