OpenStreetMap lists 409 public stations in the Netherlands in 201 towns and cities: 313 compressed-air pumps and 96 bike repair stations, 60 of which have a built-in pump. In total, 373 stations let you inflate a tire.

Most stations in the Netherlands are compressed-air pumps, often at fuel stations, car washes and bike shops. They fill fast, so add air in short bursts and check the pressure as you go.

Free or paid?

164 stations in the Netherlands carry fee information: 90 are marked free and 74 paid (55% free). Most are free, but keep a coin ready for compressor pumps. Stations without a fee tag are not necessarily free.

Valves, gauges and opening hours

35 stations list their valve types: 5 fit Presta, 35 fit Schrader, and 9 fit Dunlop (Woods) valves. Riders with Presta valves should carry a small adapter.

Of all stations, 13 have a pressure gauge, 7 are covered, and 27 are lit at night.

How public bike pumps work

Public bike pumps come in two kinds. Bike repair stations are posts with a hand or floor pump, often with tools on steel cables and a hanger to hold the bike. They stand in parks, at train stations, on campuses and along cycle routes, and they almost never cost anything. Compressed-air pumps are electric compressors, mostly at gas stations, car washes and bike shops. They fill a tire in seconds but are built for car tires.

Before you pump, check your valve. Most repair-station heads fit both Presta and Schrader; gas-station air chucks fit Schrader only, so a small Presta adapter is worth carrying. With a compressor, add air in short bursts and check the pressure, because a narrow road tire can burst well below car pressure. The right pressure is printed on the tire sidewall.
